Cadillac announced exciting news for SUV drivers who want to make their super-sized rides a little more eco-friendly. The luxury car manufacturer will introduce an all-electric, Escalade-sized SUV by 2025. It could even release before then, according to Car and Driver. The magazine also reports that the new Cadillac electric SUV won't replace the gas-powered Escalade in Cadillac's lineup. Instead, it will augment the brand's current offerings of luxury SUV options.
Does the idea of driving an all-electric SUV appeal to you? Here's all the information that's currently available about the upcoming SUV as well as other electric Cadillacs coming to our dealership soon.
What We Know About the New Cadillac Electric SUV
Will it Be an Escalade?
When rumors first began to circulate last year about an all-electric Cadillac SUV, no one was sure whether the company would market the new SUV under their established Escalade name. With Cadillac's official announcement, we now know that yes, this new SUV will be part of the Escalade family.
What's the Release Date?
There is no firm release date yet. Cadillac has only said that the new Escalade will be available before 2025. That's probably a safe target, and it's likely the vehicle will be available for sale sooner than that. Cadillac is planning on releasing 20 electric vehicles by 2023. It's an ambitious target that will have the manufacturer introducing new vehicles at a rapid rate.
What Will It Look Like?
Initial concept photos seen by Car and Driver magazine writers indicate that the styling of the all-electric version will look a lot like the 2020 Escalade. However, it will have a unique body to set it apart from its gas-using counterpart. You can expect a lot of the styling to be the same, though, so it still looks like a part of the Escalade family of vehicles.
What's the Battery Power and Range?
Cadillac drivers aren't going to settle for a less than the best when it comes to their electric vehicle, and Cadillac knows that. That's why the initial engine concept allows for battery packs up to 200.0-kWh. If you aren't an electric vehicle fanatic, that might not mean much to you. But that means the new electric Escalade will have twice the energy capacity of the Tesla Model X. Energy capacity is a good thing, too, because it means you'll be able to drive the Escalade further on a single charge. Up to 400 miles, in fact, according to InsideEVs. That's further than Tesla's current maximum range of 325 miles. The new Escalade will use GM's latest battery technology, called Ultium.
How Powerful Will the Engine Be?
Energy is good, but power is a must, too. Electric vehicles initially suffered from a lack of "pep" when drivers pressed down on the gas pedal. It put a lot of people off of buying electric vehicles when they first entered the market. It's a problem that's largely fixed in today's lineup of electric vehicles, though. Cadillac is at the forefront of electric vehicle technology. That's why the all-electric SUV could achieve as much as 1,000 horsepower using a three-motor system. That should be enough pep for nearly anyone.
Cadillac's Other Electric Vehicles
The new Cadillac electric SUV Escalade won't be the only electric Cadillac for sale. The car manufacturer is ensuring a quality lineup of luxury vehicles to ensure drivers have options when they go to make their next purchase. That will be true whether they are looking for an electric vehicle or not. Here are two other cars to keep in mind when shopping for an electric option.
Lyriq
Fox News reports that Cadillac postponed the much-anticipated reveal of the Lyriq due to coronavirus fears. While the reveal was initially scheduled for April, there is no word on a new reveal date yet. What we do know, though, is that Cadillac plans on a release date of 2022 for this new all-electric SUV option. Car and Driver reports that this new, smaller SUV is the first of a planned 20 electric models to be available on the market by 2023. It will use GM's new Ultium battery, which the maker claims will be faster to produce than any other battery option on the market. The Lyriq will have a 300-mile range and the latest in safety technology. There will also be a great infotainment system built into the dashboard. Cadillac will offer a 6-year or 70,000-mile Powertrain warranty and complimentary first-time maintenance on Lyriq vehicles.
Celestiq
Cadillac's other planned electric vehicle will be the flagship Celestiq. Road and Track reports that this hand-made beauty will come with a price tag of over $200,000. The sedan will have the Ultium battery with a 400-mile range and capabilities of getting from zero to 60 in just three seconds. To compete with other six-figure electric sedans like the Tesla, Cadillac will likely spare no expense when it comes to luxury and technology in and out of the driver's seat. More details about this high-end masterpiece will be available soon.
Should Your Next Cadillac Be Electric?
There is a lot to consider when making the switch from gas-powered to electric, but for some people, it's the right decision. Electric vehicles have come a long way in the last few years and you can trust that Cadillac won't sacrifice luxury, power, or cutting-edge technology just to achieve an all-electric model.
