It should come as no surprise that Cadillacs boast some of the most cutting-edge technology available in vehicles today. If it's been at least a few years since you shopped new cars for sale in Sarasota, you'll likely be blown away by what they're capable of doing. Here's a closer look at some of Cadillac's newest and most impressive technology features.
Super Cruise
Super Cruise is one of the most buzzed-about technologies in the entire automotive industry. It's a semi-autonomous driver-assist system, but it's far more advanced than any others in the market — it's the first and only one that's truly hands-free.
Originally introduced in 2017, Super Cruise has been available only in the CT6 sedan ever since. Now, Car and Driver reports that several 2021 Cadillac models will have Super Cruise, including the Escalade, CT4, and CT5.
The technology works by using an extensive network of high-definition maps created with lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors. According to MotorTrend, "Super Cruise uses hi-def maps to locate the car's position within four inches of accuracy. It also knows up to 1.5 miles worth of terrain ahead." The maps use by Super Cruise are updated routinely over-the-air to make the system aware of things like construction zones or road closures.
Impressive, yes, but where things really get interesting is what Super Cruise can do. The system intuitively controls speed, slowing, accelerating, and braking as needed, plus it keeps a safe distance from other vehicles and can perform automated lane changes, a new feature as of 2021.
It's important to note that drivers must be actively paying attention to the road in order for Super Cruise to remain active. The technology determines this by using an infrared camera mounted on the steering wheel to continuously track the driver's face and eyes. If your eyes are off the road for more than five or six seconds, Super Cruise sends out a series of lights, sounds, and vibrations to get your attention. In the event that you don't respond to the warnings and refocus your gaze on the road ahead, Super Cruise slows the car and ultimately stops it altogether.
Augmented Reality Navigation
AR navigation is still a very new technology, but it's currently being rolled out in Cadillac Escalades. It takes navigation to a whole new level, combining it with video from the vehicles' front-facing cameras to create a system that gives incredibly detailed information. In the Escalade, the AR navigation will be projected directly in the driver's sightline, onto a 14.2-inch screen in the digital instrument cluster. The system's audio prompts also align with the directions. For example, if your next step is to turn left, a voice will come from the left side of the vehicle. If you miss a turn, you'll be alerted by a voice that comes from behind you.
Curved OLED Display
The 2021 Cadillac Escalade has an industry-first curved OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display. It's a massive 38", but it's technically three individual screens: a 7.2-inch touchscreen with driver controls, a 14.2-inch instrument cluster, and a 16.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. The screens are all made by LG, and their resolution is twice as good as a 4K TV.
