Cadillac has been one of the most iconic brands for the past 100 years and was given the title "The Standard of the World". That title doesn't come from the aesthetics but from their high-class engineering. They were the first in the automotive industry and were able to continue to push the boundaries no one knew were there. Since the creation of the first automobile, Cadillac has proven that title and it's something they continue to do today.

History

Henry M. Leland was the founder of Cadillac and was actually apprenticed under the famous gunmaker Samuel Colt. This was how he was first introduced to precision engineering and took those skills with him to Cadillac. Leland had such high standards that he had special tools made from Sweden for the first Cadillac cars. This is actually where Cadillac would receive its first award in engineering.

Leland had three Cadillacs disassembled in front of judges, who shuffled all the parts. The group of engineers was able to put all three cars together and go on three different 500-mile trips which was a lot at the time. Cadillac was awarded the Dewar Trophy for proving their high-class engineering and the interchangeability of its parts.

This was just the start, by 1910 they were the first-ever manufacturer to mass-produce cars with enclosed cabins. This led to the implementation of the counterbalanced crankshaft to keep cats quiet and give drivers a smoother ride. What made this revolutionary was that Cadillac was able to mass-produce these cars with ease and since parts that were so precise if something did happen it was easily fixed. Cadillac was also the first to implement electric starters and headlights into mass production. Leland wanted to make Cadillacs safer and more reliable than any other car on the market.

The Present

Cadillac is still on top of the game in today's market and they are still reaching new levels. The Cadillac DeVille was the first car to be mass-produced with an infrared camera and they even had to work with the military to develop the technology. This shows attention to detail and shows Cadillac wants to be pioneers of the automotive industry even in today's market. To continue to push the envelope.

Now, 3D printing is changing the production of Cadillacs in the best possible way. They are able to mass-produce parts and try new configurations with ease. They use these printers to build all A/C units and even front bumpers. Cadillacs high-class engineers work in the second biggest 3-D printing facility in the world only behind General Electric. This shows customers the commitment Cadillac has to quality control and even defines it. They have been mass-producing cars with precision dating back to 1902.
